Sperm is created in the testis and travels along tubes called vas deferens where it is stored in the ejaculatory system until orgasmic release.

Severing and tying off these tubes prevents the sperm from reaching the outlet and being microscopic it is easily and safely re-absorbed by the body.

Because of the 'storage' factor it may be some time before the live sperm in the system prior to the operation is exhausted. A test sample of ejaculate needs to be taken some time after the procedure to prove there is no live sperm present. Occasionally this test may have to be repeated until the result is clear.
